Song Bars

Nak Rong

This is about "Suan Ahaan" (food gardens) with electone or synthesizer music and singers, not Karaoke bars. Karaoke bars have fewer women customers than A-go-go bars, and are more expensive!

All around town, and even in neighboring countries, one notices open-air places with Christmas-tree lights and singers. These open after dark and close at 2 am (usually). The food is mostly Thai, or northern. One can order simple snacks like a combination fruit plate (po-lah-mai ruam) or cashews (met mah-muang), and often there is fried pork or bar-b-qued shrimp. Sometimes there are menus in English. The staff is likely to be helpful. Drinks selection is often limited to Thailand's preferred whiskies and beers: Johnny Walker or Mekhong, Singha or Chang beer. A bucket of ice is extra, and will be kept on a small table near one you sit at. An attendant will re-fill your drinks - it is considered gauche to do so yourself!

If you are impressed with a singer, buy a lei (ma lai) or several, and walk up and put it or them over her or his head. The singer might then decide to come over a bit later to sit and chat with you.
