CHIANG RAI GUIDE

Birds, Butterflys, Flowers and Nature-Walks

Moth

The arboretums and many waterfalls are excellent for learning about local nature; for trekking in the jungle, if you really want to learn, perhaps you shoud be sure to get a Karen guide. Best late October to early March.

Birds include teals, wagtails, plovers, bulbuls, kingfishers, the Oriental Magpie-Robin and the Pied Bushchat. Many migrate through from Siberia, coming after rainy season's end. Flowers include hibuscus, orchid, bird of paradise, crocus, and iris - almost any you can think of!

Many trees bloom beautifully, also. Blooms come in munificent bounty after the rainy season, in October, and stay through the cool season. The cherry is in bloom January and February.

Yellow flowers - Champac

Gorgeous butterflies appear in plenty after the rains.

For nature walks, try Gew Taap Taang Forest Park, near the radio/TV relay station southeast of Mae Jaan across from Suan Doi Ob, or, the Siew Flower Area, south of PooSheeFa, near Doi Yao, northeast of Thoeng, by the province's eastern border ('siew' means exciting).

All is quite safe, except quite close to the northern border, where military engagements sporadically occur.
